Okay, I got an external USB hard drive case, and I put a hard drive in it. Works ok. But I want to boot linux off of it. Okay. Installed Gentoo, works great, except that I can't boot it directly. My computers supports booting from USB drives. and I can get grub to start, but then the kernel wants to access root, and it fails because it doesn't know yet about /dev/sda1 and friends. So, I look around, it seems that you have to hack the /linuxrc script to do that. Okay, except I forgot to emerge mkinitrd on it. So, I go to do that, and realize something. I just moved the DSL/wireless router to the living room (got xbox live, expecting halo 2 from SOMEONE on my .. chanukah/christmas/winter gift list), so my computer's not directly connected to the router anymore (I was using ethernet just for my computer since it was here). And the kernel's prism2_usb module ignores my nice little usb nic (which IS a prism2, BTW, but I won't name names as I don't need dlink breathing down my neck about negative reviews...oh, did I say dlink? oh well). So.. now I'm going to see if the 2004.3 cd will recognize it. (hostap didn't recognize it either, and that's annoying as well). I really don't want to pull the dsl back in here just to update gentoo, esp. not if it's not going to work with the wireless nic.
And no retailers in the area seem to carry linux-friends wlan nics anymore. I used to see the occasional orinoco-based ones, although they're kinda more expensive than what I really want to pay. I've heard something about using windows ndis drivers in linux, I need to look into that. (ah.. ndiswrapper!)
But now I'm annoyed. At least I got the apartment picked up (with LOTS of help from
, my wife). Still liking the new car. Starting to look forward to the day I have a house. Dunno that that'll happen next year, I gotta check with the banks after the new year to see what they're do. Work's going ok, nothing (yet) to report, I expect Bill, our CEO, to announce something, everyone's kinda buzzing (quietly, mind you), something's in the air, some seem to expect Michael's old duties (official Director of Child Welfare, in reality, Director of Billing, Contracts, Negotiations, Child Welfare, TANF, and anything else Bill wants) to be portioned out to everyone, some seem to think a new position with the same duties but a more realistic title may be likely. I think that he's going to portion out things, and possibly promote someone to COO or something similar (thinking maybe Erik, he's got the long-term standing, and Bill's been hanging in Erik's office alot recently). We'll see.
