blogging in the rain...

I'm sitting outside. Watching the rain. Outside. I just bought a linksys DWL-650. Loving it. 16-bit you say. Well, my old laptop was a 486.. And this is a P150. with a 500 MB hd from the old laptop. Wow! That's old. Old, but FREE. So, I'm blogging in the rain. (I had a usb dlink thing, which is on my XP desktop inside the window, and I finally got them to talk to each other, note to self: don't try to connect wireless cards when they are less than 4 feet apart, like the manual says, or they don't see each others....).

Anyways, work was slow today, did some code cleanup, some server junk cleanup. Will dial in tonight to restart a server or two.

Need to remember to go out to garage and get optical mouse that came with desktops for laptop (we had nice mice already). They're PS2, and should work with this old thing.

And, it's battery doesn't suck, either. It's not great (probably would last ~70 mins or so, I think), but it's better than none (which the 486 might as well have had).

I'll go in in a minute and get the wife some ice cream or something for letting me go outside and get cold (NOT wet, not with a computer..). She's nice. :)

Oh, and if you want to install Novell 6 on Virtual PC 2004, use the last DEC network card listed - it worked for me!
okay, when installing fedora core 2 on Microsoft Virtual PC, and you got the DVD version, here's a hint: boot from the boot.iso file, then, host the DVD on a web server, like apache under cygwin, which you probably have loaded, or can load like I just did. Then, choose HTTP for the install and away you go. VPC doesn't seem to like booting from a DVD, even a bootable one...

sick..

Ugh. Don't feel too good this morning, taking the day off of work. Throat's scratchy, all over achy, a little warm. Took some DayQuil, we'll see if it helps. I've been setting up Virtual PC trial edition since last night. I'm liking it, I setup Solaris 8 for i386, NetWare 6 (although I haven't gotten the NIC to work yet), Debian testing (sarge), Windows 2003 (I got from a local user group). Now I can setup my own home networking lab, which I think may be pretty cool. Oh, and FreeBSD 5.2.1, which I'm trying to update to Gnome 2.6. Much easier and safer than trying to use my own real hard drives...

Hopefully it stays cool today, although it probably won't. Will probably go back to bed later.

New Computers

Well, we ( and I) got new computers last night. Took me awhile to set it up, and I'm sure I'm missing stuff (like, Money 2003's file). I'm hoping this Saturday to setup my old computer for mom so she can get a new-to-her computer. So, instead of a 500, I've got a equiv-to-3000 machine. Niiice. I can run EverQuest again, and Conquerors quite nicely.

It's pretty nice, it's got 2 Firewire (tm - Apple) ports, "IEEE1394". Honestly, just license the name from Apple, it would make life easier for everyone. Anyways, that, plus 5 USB 2.0 ports, a 160 GB hard drive (which I need to resize to fit Linux(tm) on), a DVD burner + CD-RW drive. I'm happy. She's happy. We're happy.

We're also getting new glasses, although I'm going to keep my old ones for emergencies.

We were able to afford these because my work gave me ~$3700 net backpay. Because the accountant noticed that since last (LAST) january I'd been underpaid. So, we got new computers, new glasses, etc. Well, life goes on. I'm hoping to save some of it, but alot of it will go where it might have had I had it in the first place.
